There is a big exploitation of animals. And one day I just had a stew, and tried to eat a bit of meat in the stew, and it was so raw that I identified immediately with the fact that it was an animal, that this thing was alive and it had been killed for me to eat it and I thought, no I’m not into this. So I became a vegetarian.”

China Banning Dog Meat at the Horrifying Yulin Festival

Officials in the Chinese Communist Party are to ban the sale of dog meat at the Yulin Festival that takes place in the Chinese City of Yulan every year.

You may have heard of the festival that takes place every year in the Chinese city of Yulan, where dogs are routinely killed for their meat as part of the celebrations. The practice has been criticized  as cruel and unnecessary by activist groups and normal people throughout the world. In a bid to clean up the the image of the city, the Chinese Communist Party has decided to ban the practice of selling dog meat during the festival. The ban puts in to place a significant find of 100,000 Yuan for anyone found to be selling the meat during the festival.

While this may only be a temporary ban, many activists hope that it will have a knock-on effect on the dog meat trade in China: “Even if this is a temporary ban, we hope this will have a domino effect, leading to the collapse of the dog meat trade,” said Andrea Gung, from the Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project.

Most Chinese citizens don’t eat dog meat, however thousands of dogs are still killed in the Yulan Festival every single year. Unfortunately, the ban does not affect other animals that are killed during the festival and does not stop people from simply killing the animals before the festival. However, we believe that this is still a positive step in the right direction to ending this barbaric practice that has no place in the 21st century.
